The Economy is Fucked

Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer warns that the slump is going to be "more profound and long-lasting than people thought". The Economy is Fucked and in its worst state since the second world war.

In an astonishingly frank interview in the Guardian, Mr Darling admits that voters are "pissed off" with Gordon Brown and Labour and says the party must recover the "zeal" which won it three successive general elections.

Cold War Tensions

With the coming winter due to usher in record-cold temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere -- following similar, albeit mostly unreported, weather in the Southern Hemisphere's 2007 winter

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that John Hutton, the Business Secretary of State says; Britain's ability to generate its own energy needs to be above climate change in Government's priorities.

This will put the UK government in direct conflict with our real government in Brussels

Will this bluster be the much needed wind of change?

"shield and sword"

AN army of town hall spies who can hand out on-the-spot fines is being recruited by the Government.

There are already more than 1,400 so-called “accredited persons” – the equivalent of a small police force – and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith wants even more so they can do jobs regarded as too trivial for the police. Daily Express

In the old East Germany, one in 20 communist party members was a State spy. It would not have been unreasonable to assume that at least one State informer (inoffizielle Mitarbeiter) was present in any party of ten or twelve dinner guests.

The East German communist party leaders saturated their realm with more spies than had any other totalitarian government in recent history

The State police knew no limits and had no shame when it came to "protecting the party and the state."

Olymprick

As Gordon Brown prepares for today's events in Beijing, with the Olympic torch being handed to London. He was visibly buoyed by the performance of the British team, he has spent the past few days meeting the athletes and watching them perform.

He is clearly hoping for a "Beijing bounce" but the polls this weekend show little sign of one emerging.

Pressed by Sky News if he was confident that he would still be in a job by Christmas, the Prime Minister replied: "Of course."

He added: "I am totally focussed on only one thing and that is taking this country through these difficult economic circumstances.

"We have got to get on with the job. People want us to get on with the job. Getting on with the job is the most important thing at the moment."

Stay Safe

The Government has admitted that the private contractor PA consulting working for the Home Office has lost a computer memory stick containing personal details of all 84,000 prisoners in England and Wales.

This is the latest in a string of data leaks the main one being the admission last November that the confidential records on 25 million Britons who receive child benefits had been lost.

The only way to stay safe and protect your identity........don't tell the government anything

A Good Day to Bury the SNP

The Scotsman Newspaper is reporting that the LABOUR party are planning a snap Glenrothes by- election as part of a desperate strategy to relaunch Gordon Brown's premiership.

Party chiefs are braced for another devastating poll defeat but believe holding the by-election early – with Thursday, September 11 the soonest possible date – would leave time for the Prime Minister to bounce back at Labour's conference later that month

Bookmakers have already established the SNP are the 11-9 on favourites to win the seat this time round.

Another By-election

Gordon Brown faces a fresh test of Labour's fading popularity after the death John MacDougall, MP for Glenrothes in Fife who died today in hospital aged 60 after a long illness.

A by-election will now be fought for what should be a safe Labour seat, bordering Brown's own Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath constituency.

As Parliament isn't sitting until October, perhaps the family will be able to bury the body before a by-election is announced.

Deep Hole

The Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich the former local government minister Nick Raynsford has written an article and said that Labour was in a 'deep hole' and he has warned Gordon Brown he risked inviting the contempt of voters with attempts to buy support with emergency tax cuts.

Raynsford also said Labour needed to 'stop inappropriate digging', and instead focus on the 'steps necessary to extract ourselves from the hole.

Darling stitch up by Brown

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has said that one in four of its members had seen agreed house sales fall through as a direct result of uncertainty with regards to stamp duty.

Jim Cousins, a Labour member of the Treasury select committee, said: “This has got to be sorted, and fast. It would not be so bad if the market were strong and rising, but it is not - it is weak and falling.

“To hope this will just go away would be a grave error. It would be very irresponsible to let this uncertainty go on.”

However, allies of Darling believe he was ‘stitched up’ by a Downing Street briefing operation designed to test the popularity of possible moves to suspend the tax. The Chancellor, who was unable to confirm or deny the plan, was then subjected to a barrage of criticism for bringing the housing market to a halt as buyers pulled out of purchases in the hope of making future savings. Boyhood Hero's

Gordon Brown reveals his boyhood hero was explorer Captain Scott - who died alone in the cold. Daily Mail

Just last month, Gordon Brown compared himself to another tragic hero. In an interview, he said it was 'absolutely correct' to compare him to the brooding but short-tempered Heathcliff who appears in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights.

Songe d'Automne

John Prescott the former deputy prime minister comes out in support of Gordon Brown

He wrote in a blog: “But it wasn’t the Captain that sank the Titanic – a ship they claimed was unsinkable – it was the iceberg. “The best way to avoid disaster is to manage your way around the problem.”

Prescott’s comments came as it emerged that the Prime Minister has instructed his closest aides to track down 10 junior ministers threatening to undermine his leadership by resigning- so he can sack them first.

Électricité de France (EDF)

Électricité de France (EDF) the 85% French Government owned energy giant has pulled out of a £12bn deal to buy British Energy, hours before it was expected to announced.

In a statement, EDF said that "after in depth discussions, EDF considers that the conditions for a major development in Great Britain are not met to date." The last minute ditching of the offer is likely to hit British Energy shares this morning.

I wonder if it is anything to do with Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who is considering imposing a windfall tax on the multi-billion pound profits of energy companies.

Would you invest in the UK only to have a cash strapped government eat at your profits?
