The meaning of Article 224.

Article 224 (of the European Treaty) states: that Member States shall consult one another with a view to taking in common the necessary steps to avoid the operation of the Common Market being affected by measures which a Member State may be called upon to take in case of serious internal disturbances affecting public policy or the maintenance of law and order ( "ordre public"), in case of war or serious international tension constituting a threat of war, or in order to carry out undertakings into which it has entered for the purpose of maintaining peace and international security.

They have consulted and have expressed their view. We don't give a shit about EU Citezens.

European foreign ministers failed last night to back Britain in a threat to freeze the €14 billion trade in exports to Iran, as the hostage crisis descended into a propaganda circus.

EU foreign ministers meeting in Germany called for the sailors to be freed but ruled out any tightening of lucrative export credit rules. The EU is Iran’s biggest trading partner (Times)

If you wish to renounce your EU Citizenship then you can do so by writing to the government. There is a template Here and there is an alternative route via the UN 1503 procedure Here

Tomorrow belongs to me

On the occasion of the Informal Meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers in Bremen (30 – 31 March), 54 children from all 27 EU Member States will gather there to take part in a week-long workshop entitled "Europa Kinderland" (Europe, Land of Children).

At the invitation of Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier the 9 – 10-year-old children will discover Europe for themselves in a joint project: The starting point is the song entitled "Kleine Europäer / Europa Kinderland" (Little Europeans / Europe, Land of Children).

The closing song will proberbly go like this

[Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier (spoken)]
Herr Atkins! You are not leaving so early?

[Little tommy]
I do not find this party amusing.

[Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier]
Ah- but it is just beginning. Come, we will make it
amusing- you and I- Ja?

Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier- Tommy this is for you:

The sun on the meadow is summery warm.
The stag in the forest runs free.
But gather together to greet the storm.
Tomorrow belongs to me.

The branch of the linden is leafy and
Green,
The Rhine gives its gold to the sea.
But somewhere a glory awaits unseen.
Tomorrow belongs to me.

Herr Aitkins! Sing with me!

[Frau Merkel AND Little Tommy]
The babe in his cradle is closing his eyes
The blossom embraces the bee.
But soon, says a whisper;
"Arise, arise,
Tomorrow belongs to me"

[Frau Merkel]
Everybody!

Oh Fatherland, Fatherland,
Show us the sign
Your children have waited to see.
The morning will come
When the world is mine.
Tomorrow belongs to me!

Fachidiot

Is a German word recently added into everyday English, as announced by the Goethe-Institut on 8 December 2006 in its competition to find the word that would most benefit the English language.

The lady nominating it said it could be clumsily translated by "idiot of your own subject". She explained that "one-track specialist" was not quite right because you wouldnt call a real specialist an idiot. A one-track specialist is somebody who knows a lot about a particular field; a Fachidiot as well. ... The difference is that a one-track specialist still notices what is going on around him in the world. A Fachidiot simply does not, or not anymore."

The runner up word in the 2006 competition was:

Backpfeifengesicht – meaning a face that makes you want to slap it.

Berlin Declaration

European Union leaders meeting yesterday faced a daunting challenge: Making sure a statement marking the European Unions 50th birthday on March 25 is simple, jargon-free and uplifting.

Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, chairman of the group of countries with the common euro currency, wants the euro to be mentioned. Not surprisingly, non eurozone-countries such as the UK and Sweden dislike the idea.

Nine EU members, including France, Spain and Italy, are pushing for a stronger emphasis on what they call "social Europe," with a focus on workers' rights. But free-marketeers in the UK and the Czech Republic cold-shoulder any such plans.

Meanwhile, Poland is lobbying for a reference to Europe's Christian roots, something that secular France refuses to accept.

There is also disagreement on whether the statement should mention EU enlargement as a success story given the European Unions current "enlargement blues" and weariness about further expansion.

Amidst the discord, EU states do agree that the Berlin Declaration should be easy to read.

Is that easy enough for you

That EU flag again

The European Union (Information) Bill currently going through Parliament, as well as making provision for more EU 'information' to be available in public places also makes provision for the flying of the EU Flag on various public buildings.

After successfully forcing the removal of the EU Flag from a number of public buildings across the country it appears that the Government is attempting to introduce legislation to give the European Union flag status equivalent to the British 'Union Flag.'

The proposal is contained in a Private Members Bill introduced by Lord Dykes and is currently going through committee stage. It proposes:

2. The Flag of the European Union
The flag of the European Union shall be flown on Government and public buildings alongside the union flag.

This appears to be a back-door attempt to legitimise the flying of the flag of a highly contentious political project. The EU is not a country and therefore presently cannot be flown from any public building. To do so would require planning consent as it is classed as 'an outdoor advertisement.' This most offensive piece of legislation means that the EU Flag will fly from ALL public buildings, including council offices and libraries.

In 2005 Neil Herron and the Campaign successfully forced the removal of the EU Flag from a number of buildings including Wear Valley District Council's offices. The European Parliament offices in London were also forced to take down the flag.

This created a considerable degree of political embarassment.

However, Minister for Housing and Planning, Yvette Cooper MP, wrote: "When new Advertisement Control Regulations are introduced in 2006, any country's national flag, however they are flown, as well as the European Union flag may be flown without having to apply for permission provided nothing is added to the flag. At present the European Union flag may be flown provided express consent to fly the flag has been given by the local planning authority. It is for the local planning authority to determine whether the European Union flag should be permitted and whether they consider it necessary to take enforcement action. Government buildings benefit from Crown immunity."

A consultation was undertaken but the results appeared not to have surfaced.

Speakout Campaign spokesman Neil Herron states:

"It seems strange to me that we have to fight to fly our National Flag and the flag of our Patron Saint even on just one day of the year yet sneaking through Parliament is a Bill which will give the flag of a highly contentious political project equal status to the flag that 1.25million in two World Wars laid down their lives for, and our troops continue to do so in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The British public is fed up to the back teeth of the continuous attempts to give extra credence to the EU and the all pervasive EU symbolism ... on passports, car registration plates, driving licences and now this outrageous attempt to give the EU Flag status equivalent to that of our own Union Flag. I for one will be deeply offended if this alien flag is flown over our Council or other buildings. The EU flag represents an undemocratic, unaccountable and corrupt institution that has never been given the British public's endorsement. The EU Flag here in the United Kingdom is a reminder of the complete betrayal of the people by parliamentarians through our entry into what the people were told was just a Common Market for trade. We are great friends with America, our troops are fighting and dying alongside Americans as I write this, but we do not harmonise our laws for them, they do not govern us nor do we fly their flag in preference to our own. The vast majority of British people are not loyal to or have any allegiance with the European Union? The time has come to give the British public a referendum on our relationship with the EU"

The Speakout will continue to campaign against the flying of the EU Flag and will take any necessary legal steps to force its removal from Local Authority and public buildings.

Conservative MP Philip Davies states: "This is the latest in a long line of attempts to try to make us feel European by stealth. If this is part of some grand plan to make everybody feel European then I think it's a pretty disreputable idea."

Crime Scene

Detectives believe they have foiled an attempt by Downing Street to wreck the cash-for-honours investigation after they obtained an injunction banning publication of a potentially explosive email about the inquiry.

The email from Ruth Turner, one of Tony Blair's most trusted aides, was to Jonathan Powell the No 10 chief of staff. It refers to Lord Levy the Prime Minister's personal fund raiser.

Detectives leading the 11-month investigation believe it was deliberately leaked to the BBC on Friday night to sabotage the inquiry. Telegraph

Senior BBC sources last night indicated that it would not be seeking to overturn an injunction imposed on Friday night after an application by the Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, who said releasing details of the communication, believed to be known by the BBC political editor Nick Robinson, would harm the inquiry.

"Blair" is arrested

and led away by actors posing as police at the end of a spoof video, which can be seen at www.uglyrumours.com

Ugly Rumours, a group named after the band in which Prime Minister Tony Blair used to perform as an Oxford student in the 1970s, has recorded an anti-war anthem to protest against the leader's decision to go to war in Iraq.

The song is a cover version of soul singer Edwin Starr's hit "War", a protest against the war in Vietnam.
