GORDON BROWN performed an abrupt policy U-turn yesterday, promising a cash handout to the low-paid to see off the Labour rebellion over tax plans.

The sub-Prime Minister, who had previously played down the scale and seriousness of the backbench revolt, promised to compensate low-earning households by fiddling with tax credits and the winter fuel allowance to pensioners
