Counterfeit Democracy
Why do we bother to vote for our own MP's to represent us and make our laws in a United Kingdom parliament
The European Parliament for the first time ever is set to vote for criminal penalties – including imprisonment across the EU for counterfeiting and piracy.
MEPs gathering in Strasbourg ftommorrow (Wednesday (25 April) are expected to vote in favour of a first-reading report by Italian socialist MEP Nicola Zingaretti proposing criminal measures aimed at ensuring the enforcement of intellectual property rights across the European Union.
The EU commissioner for justice and home affairs, Franco Frattini, said last year "We decided that counterfeiting is a real crime against industry, constituting a growing business for organised crime and is a real threat for consumers," Frattini said. "Our proposal aims to eradicate safe havens for the criminal organisations on counterfeiting and piracy."
What about our own legislature? This is piracy, a counterfeit democracy at work.
