Common European Union Rat
Defra tells us that The European Union Landfill Directive represents a step change in the way we dispose of waste in this country and will help drive waste up the hierarchy through waste minimisation and increased levels of recycling and recovery.

However, the reduction in rubbish collections is being blamed for record numbers of rats, which has been claimed is an increasing threat to public health.
The brown rat population has surged by 39 per cent in 2005 according to the National Pest Technicians Association. It said that fortnightly collections and the widespread use of composting bins was exacerbating the problem. The problem would get worse as more councils switched to compulsory recycling,
