The government said it would pay tax-free, flat-rate bonuses to front-line soldiers that would amount to an additional 2,240 pounds over a six-month tour of duty overseas.

Defence Secretary Des Browne told parliament the payments, to be backdated to April this year, would cover the tax bill soldiers face when they return from a six-month operation.
