EU Commission split over reform treaty

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia comes out in support of Jean-Claude Trichet the president of the European Central Bank, Almunia thinks the EU Reform Treaty is iniquitous..

On Monday he called on EU states to respect the independence of the European Central Bank (ECB) over monetary policy and setting interest rates.

"Everyone has a right to his opinion on monetary policy and on interest rates but nobody should put pressure on the (central) bank," Spaniard Almunia told an economic forum in Madrid.

Pity he didn't cite directly Article 9 of the EU Reform Treaty which will remove the independence of the ECB
