Later today Gordon Brown will try to reconnect with his party, and rescue his drifting leadership, by using his speech to the Labour Party conference today to return to the good old days of BLAIR.

Where are they all

Today Alistair Darling addressed the Labour Party conference on the crisis facing the economy. And the hall was half empty.



It was the same yesterday, for the Prime Minister's "operation fightback" rallying cry to his party, the hall probably wasn't even half full.

Lord Mandelson the business secretary says it is 'absolutely ridiculous' to suggest Brown has a problem with pill use, and criticises Andrew Marr for asking the PM about the rumours..

The Daily Telegraph discloses, the expenses claims made by MPs were leaked because of anger over the Government’s failure to equip the Armed Forces properly while politicians lavished taxpayers’ money on themselves.



Workers who processed the MPs’ claims included serving soldiers, who were moonlighting between tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan to earn extra cash for body armour and other vital equipment.



The soldiers were furious when they saw what MPs, including the Prime Minister, were claiming for and their anger convinced one of their civilian colleagues that taxpayers had a right to know how their money was being spent.

Charles Clarke, the former home secretary, has launched a withering attack on Gordon Brown, telling the Prime Minister to quit or Labour will be condemned to at least a decade in opposition.




In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Charles Clarke described Gordon Brown’s team at No 10 as the “weakest I've seen ever”.

EU leaders are said to be furious that the Czech Republic is planning to delay signing the Lisbon treaty for up to six months even if the Irish vote "yes" in their referendum next month.



Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President who helped to draw up the treaty after the French and Dutch voted against the EU Constitution, has warned Prague that it faces "consequences" if it does not swiftly follow an Irish "yes" with its own ratification.

The European Commission has warned Lloyds Banking Group that it may have to split off Halifax as punishment for the billions of pounds of state aid that it has received. The EU Competition Commissioner has yet to make a final decision but banking sources say it is clear that she is planning to impose draconian penalties on Lloyds (The Times).
