That's the way to do it

“Should the United Kingdom retain its membership of the European Union?”

“If it remains a member of the European Union, should the United Kingdom approve the Lisbon Treaty?”

The amendment has been proposed by the Labour MP, Ian Davidson, who has been leading the charge for a referendum and it will appear on the Order Paper tomorrow and will come to a vote next Wednesday.

If Clegg assents to this amendment he would expose just how deeply his party is split on the Lisbon treaty and he might face a rebellion from the Europhile party grandees in the Lords who pushed Ming Campbell into going back on the Lib Dem’s manifesto commitment to a referendum. spectator

Lib-Dems Walk out of Parliament

Lib Dem Ed Davey was ordered out of the House of Commons, after words with the deputy speaker. He was angry at the decision by the speaker not to allow an amendment to debate and vote on the Lib Dem call for a referendum to be held on the UK's membership of the EU. Lib Dem leader Nick Cleg then got up and walked out of House followed by the rest of his parties MP's

Considering that the Lib Dems promised a referendum on the Treaty Establishing a Constitution for Europe in their general election manifesto and not a referendum on an EU in or out, then this walk out just demonstrates the immature and childish approach to politics held by this party

Kosovo 21st century Sudetenland

"in principle" Kosovo is a province of Serbia (De jure), "in practice", the United Nations has exercised De facto control since 1999.

If the province of Kosovo declare unilateral independence on Sunday, then surely the United Nations must adopt the same principles which applied to the UDI of Rhodesia in 1965

United Nations Security Council Resolution 217, adopted on November 20, 1965, determined that the situation resulting from the UDI was extremely grave and that the Government of the United Kingdom should put an end to it as it constitutes a threat to international peace and security. The Council also called upon nations not to recognise what it deemed "this illegal authority" or entertain diplomatic relations with it. It also asked all states to refrain from economic relations with Rhodesia.

No, what we get is hypocrisy

With Kosovo likely to declare independence on Sunday, The European Union's Emperor Jose Manuel Barroso said he hoped for unity within the 27-member states. The EU needs to act "in a coherent manner," The EU is to send a 2,200 strong police and justice mission to Kosovo to ensure the rule of law.

British Olympic chiefs are to force athletes to sign a contract promising not to speak out about China's appalling human rights record – or face being banned from travelling to Beijing. Mail on Sunday

Lord Alton said: “It is extraordinary to bar athletes from expressing an opinion about China's human-rights record. About the only justification for participating in the Beijing Games is that it offers an opportunity to encourage more awareness about human rights.

“Imposing compulsory vows of silence is an affront to our athletes, and in China it will be viewed as acquiescence.

“Each year 8,000 executions take place in China, political and religious opinion is repressed, journalists are jailed and the internet and overseas broadcasts are heavily censored.

“For our athletes to be told that they may not make any comment makes a mockery of our own country's belief in free speech.”

Wintry blasts from the warmists

So writes Christopher Booker in todays Sunday Telegraph

For ill-tempered venom it is hard to equal the believers in man-made global warming. Not for some time has anything I have written drawn so much personal abuse as my report last week of a graph on the Cryosphere Today website showing that, after its record drop last summer to 4 million square kilometres, ice cover in the Arctic has now recovered to 13 million sq km, almost where it was this time last year.

The point made by those who called me "monumentally stupid" (courtesy of The Guardian's political correspondent, Michael White) or accused me of "utter drivel" was that what should alarm us is not winter ice-cover but the fact - which I did mention - that it dropped to its lowest recorded level last summer.

Once all these climate experts have recovered from their fit of self-righteousness, perhaps they could explain why, at the same time that Arctic ice is diminishing, ice in the Antarctic has increased to easily its highest level ever recorded at this time of year, currently 30 per cent above normal.

After all, it is not winter in the Antarctic, it is summer. And isn't the point about this warming we are all supposed to be panicking about is that it is meant to be global?

Off with their heads

Article 37 of the 39 Articles of Religion is quite clear.

"The King's Majesty hath the chief power in this Realm of England, and other his Dominions, unto whom the chief Government of all Estates of this Realm, whether they be Ecclesiastical or Civil, in all causes doth appertain, and is not, nor ought to be, subject to any foreign Jurisdiction".

The Thirty - nine Articles of Religion were drawn up by the church in convocation in 1563

Subscription to them by the clergy was ordered by act of Parliament in 1571. The Subscription (Thirty-Nine Articles) Act (1571), 13 Elizabeth, Cap. 12

The 39 Articles can be found in the Book of Common Prayer, which has not been repealed and are part of the British constitution through the Act of Settlement 1701 and the Act of Union with Scotland 1707

Clergy of the Church of England are still required to acknowledge that the Articles are "agreeable to the Word of God," CANON C15 OF THE DECLARATION OF ASSENT

However, what is more important, it is not only the Archbishop of Canterbury that should be worried about the implication of article 37. This Labour Government, which is forcing the European Union Lisbon Treaty upon us, are equally guilty by subjecting us to a foreign Jurisdiction.

Who will rid us of this troublesome Government.

"Who will rid us of this troublesome priest?"

The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says the adoption of Islamic Sharia law in the UK is "unavoidable". BBC

Article 26 of the 39 articles of religion

Of the Unworthiness of the Ministers, which hinders not the effect of the Sacraments.

Although in the visible Church the evil be ever mingled with the good, and sometimes the evil have chief authority in the Ministration of the Word and Sacraments, yet forasmuch as they do not the same in their own name, but in Christ's, and do minister by his commission and authority, we may use their Ministry, both in hearing the Word of God, and in receiving the Sacraments. Neither is the effect of Christ's ordinance taken away by their wickedness, nor the grace of God's gifts diminished from such as by faith, and rightly, do receive the Sacraments ministered unto them; which be effectual, because of Christ's institution and promise, although they be ministered by evil men.

Nevertheless, it appertaineth to the discipline of the Church, that inquiry be made of evil Ministers, and that they be accused by those that have knowledge of their offences; and finally, being found guilty, by just judgment be deposed.

There has been no repeal of the 39 Articles of religion since ratification in 1571 except for the amendments as enacted within the Toleration Act 1689

VIII. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That no person dissenting from the Church of England in holy orders, or pretended holy orders, or pretending to holy orders, nor any preacher of teacher of any congregation of dissenting Protestants, that shall make and subscribe the declaration aforesaid, and take the said oaths at the general or quarter sessions of the peace to be held for the county, town, parts, or division where such person lives, which court is hereby empowered to administer the same, and shall also declare his approbation of and subscribe the articles of religion mentioned in the statute made in the thirteenth year of the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth, except the thirty-fourth, thirty-fifth, and thirty-sixth, and these words of the twentieth article, viz. "the Church hath power to decree rites or ceremonies, and authority in controversies of faith, and yet", shall be liable to any of the pains or penalties mentioned in an act made inn the seventeenth year of the reign of King Charles the Second, intituled An act for restraining nonconformists from inhabiting in corporations; nor the penalties mentioned in the aforesaid act made in the two and twentieth year of his said late Majesty's reign, for or by reason of such persons preaching at any meeting for the exercise of religion; nor to the penalty of one hundred pounds mentioned in an act made in the thirteenth and fourteenth of King Charles the Second, intituled, An act for the uniformity of public prayers, and administration of sacraments, and other rites and ceremonies: and for establishing the form of making, ordaining, and consecrating of bishops, priests, and deacons in the Church of England, for officiating in any congregation for the exercise of religion permitted and allowed by this act.

They were confirmed within the Act of Settlement 1701

IV. And whereas the laws of England are the birth-right of the people thereof, and all the Kings and Queens, who shall ascend the throne of this Realm, ought to administer the government of the same according to the said laws, and all their officers and ministers ought to serve them respectively according to the same: the said Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, do therefore further humbly pray, That all the laws and statutes of this Realm for securing the established religion, and the rights and liberties of the people thereof, and all other laws and statutes of the same now in force, may be ratified and confirmed, and the same are by His Majesty, by and with the advice of the said Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, and by authority of the same, ratified and confirmed accordingly.

They were also enshrined by and were consolidated, as fundamental and unchangeable by the Treaty of the Union 1707.

The Lord Chancellor (Lord Irvine of Lairg) 2d July 2002 “As to the Act of Settlement, in whole or in part, I repeat that I believe that there is no clear and pressing need for repeal or reform”

AUSTRALIAN CONCERNS

THE ENFORCED EU CITIZENSHIP OF THE QUEEN

We are concerned that the implementation of the Treaty of Lisbon, also termed The European Reform Treaty, may have consequences which could well affect the status of The Queen as Queen of Australia and other Realms.

The enforced citizenship of the Union shall, under the Treaty of Lisbon, now "be additional to national citizenship" and not, as before merely "complement" it. The EU Council of Ministers has not been able to explain what obligations this citizenship would impose on The Queen in regard to her position as Queen of nations outside the authority of the Union, advising that it is not within their competence.

No one has also been able to explain what the position would be if it is held that those Acts of the British Parliament which still have relevance to the Realms, such as the Statute of Westminster and the Act of Settlement, are found to conflict with European legislation which now has an overriding authority.

This matter is of such import to the stability of our own constitutional arrangements, that I appeal to the British Parliament to have these matters clarified in a legislative format, rather than merely accepting unsubstantiated assurances which have no legal significance.
